Profile
New York power
Generates renewable electricity from wind, supporting New York communities and producing enough electricity for about 20,000 homes for a year.*
Air quality & health in Wyoming County
Wyoming County has a population of 39,532. Across five conditions the American Lung Association tracks — childhood asthma, adult asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease — it reports a combined 8,480 cases in the county.
No ozone or particle pollution grades are available for this county in the most recent report. The figures above describe how many residents live with conditions sensitive to air quality — not measured pollution levels.
Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to certain health conditions, particularly for children and older adults. Where electricity comes from affects how much combustion pollution is produced on the grid.
These figures describe the county as a whole and are not specific to this facility. Sources: American Lung Association – State of the Air (New York); U.S. EPA Air Quality Index.
The story behind this New York renewable energy facility
Of New York’s 33 wind plants in this category, High Sheldon Wind Farm in Strykersville ranks #15 by electricity produced in 2024. It uses onshore wind turbines, which are tall machines on land that turn moving air into electricity. Invenergy Services LLC owns it, and it began operating in 2009.
The plant can produce up to 112.5 MW, and a megawatt is simply a measure of how much power it can deliver at once. In 2024 it generated 201.4 gigawatt-hours, a gigawatt-hour being a very large unit of electricity, which is enough to power about 20,000 homes. Wind farms run only when the wind blows, so output rises and falls with the weather.
Environmental impact
Produces electricity without burning fuel, which avoids roughly 78,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year compared with producing the same electricity from the national mix of power sources — about the same as not burning about 9,100,000 gallons of gasoline.*
Nearby places worth exploring
High Sheldon sits in Wyoming County, in the farm country of western New York. Letchworth State Park lies along the county’s eastern edge, and Silver Lake is another well-known spot in the area. Nearby farm towns such as Warsaw and Attica offer a taste of everyday rural life in the region.
