Profile
New York power
Generates carbon-free electricity from nuclear fission, supporting New York communities and producing enough electricity for about 500,000 homes for a year.*
Air quality & health in Wayne County
Wayne County has a population of 90,829. Across five conditions the American Lung Association tracks — childhood asthma, adult asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease — it reports a combined 19,472 cases in the county.
The county received a grade of C for ozone pollution. No particle pollution grade is available.
Federal monitoring recorded 251 days of good air quality and 13 moderate days in the county over the most recent year, with 1 day rated unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to certain health conditions, particularly for children and older adults. Where electricity comes from affects how much combustion pollution is produced on the grid.

The story behind this New York clean energy facility
Of New York’s three nuclear plants, the R E Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario, Wayne County, is the smallest by output, yet it still ranks #7 among all 908 power plants reporting in the state. It sits on Lake Rd. and draws its cooling water from Lake Ontario.
Ginna began operating in 1970 and runs a single generator rated at 614.0 MW. A megawatt (MW) is a measure of how much power a plant can deliver at once. In 2024 it produced 4,992.8 gigawatt-hours, a unit of electricity over time, which is about 500,000 homes’ worth. Nuclear plants make power without burning fuel, so they are carbon-free.
Environmental impact
Produces electricity by splitting atoms rather than burning fuel, which avoids roughly 1,900,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year compared with producing the same electricity from the national mix of power sources — about the same as not using about 4,700,000 barrels of oil.*
Nearby places worth exploring
