Profile
New York power
This facility is kept available as backup capacity rather than run continuously. It reported 7 MWh sent to the grid in 2024.
Air quality & health in New York County
New York County has a population of 1,597,451. Across five conditions the American Lung Association tracks — childhood asthma, adult asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease — it reports a combined 330,374 cases in the county.
The county received a grade of F for ozone pollution. For particle pollution — the fine soot and dust that can be breathed deep into the lungs — it received a grade of B.
Federal monitoring recorded 210 days of good air quality and 100 moderate days in the county over the most recent year, with 6 days rated unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to certain health conditions, particularly for children and older adults. Where electricity comes from affects how much combustion pollution is produced on the grid.
These figures describe the county as a whole and are not specific to this facility. Sources: American Lung Association – State of the Air (New York); U.S. EPA Air Quality Index.
The story behind this New York power plant
Among New York’s 46 oil-fired plants, the 74th Street plant sits near the bottom of the list, ranking #44 of 46 by electricity produced in 2024. Consolidated Edison, known as Con Edison, runs it at 506 E 75th Street, using the East River as its water source.
It has operated since 1968 and holds two generators with a combined capacity of 37.0 MW. Capacity is the most electricity a plant can make at one moment. The plant burns kerosene, a light petroleum fuel, and works as a standby unit, meaning it is kept ready for times when extra power is needed rather than running steadily. In 2024 it produced just 7 MWh.
Nearby places worth exploring
The plant sits on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, close to Central Park, a short walk west. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is nearby along Fifth Avenue. Farther afield, Times Square, MoMA, and Hudson River Park along the west side are all part of the borough’s wider landscape.
