Profile
New York power
Converts landfill gas into renewable electricity, supporting New York communities and producing enough electricity for about 3,300 homes for a year.*
Air quality & health in Allegany County
Allegany County has a population of 46,651. Across five conditions the American Lung Association tracks — childhood asthma, adult asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease — it reports a combined 9,751 cases in the county.
No ozone or particle pollution grades are available for this county in the most recent report. The figures above describe how many residents live with conditions sensitive to air quality — not measured pollution levels.
Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to certain health conditions, particularly for children and older adults. Where electricity comes from affects how much combustion pollution is produced on the grid.
These figures describe the county as a whole and are not specific to this facility. Sources: American Lung Association – State of the Air (New York); U.S. EPA Air Quality Index.
The story behind this New York renewable energy facility
Among New York’s 17 biofuel plants, the Hyland LFGTE Facility in Angelica, Allegany County, ranks ninth by the electricity it produced in 2024. It runs on landfill gas, which is the gas that naturally forms as buried waste breaks down, and it has been operating since 2008.
The facility produced 33.3 gigawatt-hours in 2024 (a gigawatt-hour is a large unit for measuring electricity), which is enough to power about 3,300 homes. Its three generators have a combined capacity of 4.8 MW (a megawatt is the most electricity a plant can send out at one moment), and the plant is owned by Innovative Energy Systems Inc.
Environmental profile
Captures methane released by decomposing landfill waste and burns it to make electricity. Methane traps more heat in the atmosphere than the carbon dioxide produced by burning it, so the gas is collected rather than left to escape.
