Profile
New York power
Converts landfill gas into renewable electricity, supporting New York communities and producing enough electricity for about 2,800 homes for a year.*
Air quality & health in Broome County
Broome County has a population of 196,077. Across five conditions the American Lung Association tracks — childhood asthma, adult asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease — it reports a combined 40,960 cases in the county.
No ozone or particle pollution grades are available for this county in the most recent report. The figures above describe how many residents live with conditions sensitive to air quality — not measured pollution levels.
Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to certain health conditions, particularly for children and older adults. Where electricity comes from affects how much combustion pollution is produced on the grid.
These figures describe the county as a whole and are not specific to this facility. Sources: American Lung Association – State of the Air (New York); U.S. EPA Air Quality Index.
The story behind this New York renewable energy facility
Nanticoke LFG is one of 17 biofuel plants in New York, and it ranks 12th of those 17 by electricity produced in 2024. It runs on landfill gas, the methane that forms naturally as buried trash breaks down, which here is captured and used as fuel instead of drifting away.
The plant has been operating since 2006 and is owned by Broome Energy Resources, LLC. In 2024 it produced 28.2 gigawatt-hours (a gigawatt-hour is a way of counting a large amount of electricity), roughly what about 2,800 homes use in a year. Its capacity is 4.0 MW (a megawatt measures how much power a plant can deliver at one moment).
Environmental profile
Captures methane released by decomposing landfill waste and burns it to make electricity. Methane traps more heat in the atmosphere than the carbon dioxide produced by burning it, so the gas is collected rather than left to escape.
Nearby places worth exploring
The plant sits in the Binghamton area of Broome County, where the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers meet. Binghamton is home to Binghamton University, and Otsiningo Park and the Discovery Center are local places to spend an afternoon.

* Homes-powered and emissions comparisons are annual estimates based on national averages from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. “Homes powered” describes a quantity of electricity, not direct service to specific households. How we calculate this.
