Profile
New York power
Converts farm biogas into renewable electricity, supporting New York communities and producing enough electricity for about 380 homes for a year.*
Air quality & health in Wyoming County
Wyoming County has a population of 39,532. Across five conditions the American Lung Association tracks — childhood asthma, adult asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease — it reports a combined 8,480 cases in the county.
No ozone or particle pollution grades are available for this county in the most recent report. The figures above describe how many residents live with conditions sensitive to air quality — not measured pollution levels.
Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to certain health conditions, particularly for children and older adults. Where electricity comes from affects how much combustion pollution is produced on the grid.
These figures describe the county as a whole and are not specific to this facility. Sources: American Lung Association – State of the Air (New York); U.S. EPA Air Quality Index.
The story behind this New York renewable energy facility
Synergy Biogas, on Lemley Road in Wyoming, is the smallest of New York’s 17 biofuel plants when measured by the electricity it produced in 2024. It runs on biogas, a fuel made from decomposing waste, which a generator burns to make electricity. It has been operating since 2011.
Last year it produced 3.8 gigawatt-hours, which is a measure of electricity over time, enough to power about 380 homes. Its single generator has a capacity of 1.4 MW, a megawatt being the most power a plant can deliver at one moment. CH4 Biogas LLC owns it, and its power flows onto the National Grid system.
Environmental profile
Captures methane released by breaking down farm and food waste and burns it to make electricity. Methane traps more heat in the atmosphere than the carbon dioxide produced by burning it, so the gas is collected rather than left to escape.
Nearby places worth exploring
Wyoming County is farm country, with small towns like Warsaw and Attica scattered across it. Along the county’s eastern edge, Letchworth State Park draws visitors to its wooded gorge setting, and Silver Lake sits nearby as a quieter spot for time on the water.

* Homes-powered and emissions comparisons are annual estimates based on national averages from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. “Homes powered” describes a quantity of electricity, not direct service to specific households. How we calculate this.
